Why FOSS not FLOSS
This explains why I used the word FOSS in my digital life and footprint instead of FLOSS.
What is FOSS?
FOSS means Free and Open Source Software. It doesn’t mean the software is free of cost more so the word free is used as in freedom. It means that the software's source code is open for all and anyone is free to use, study and modify the code. This principle allows others to contribute to developing and improving a software like a community.
What is FLOSS?
FLOSS means Free Libre Open Source Software and there really is no difference between FOSS and FLOSS but the term was coined to emphasize the freedom part of FOSS like I said free as in freedom not free of cost. It's all just political really. The meaning of Libre is - the state of being free, as in "liberty" or "having freedom".
So why not just use the word FLOSS then?
Well I'm glad you asked, FLOSS also means something else and chances are if you're reading this and aren't into linux or FOSS itself you'll be thinking about flossing ones teeth 😬 yeah not something I want most people around the world thinking I just love flossing my teeth or something, that could be a bit weird 😅
